Many of Australia’s newest plays and art exhibitions open in Melbourne, so it seems there’s always something going on. Begin by visiting the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia’s oldest art gallery, where you can enjoy the wonderful stain-glassed ceiling in the Great Hall. You might want to lie on the floor with the others to do so. The Aboriginal culture collection at the Melbourne Museum is worth a visit, and you can marvel at the imposing Royal Exhibition Building next door, which housed Australia’s first parliament. For the opera, symphony, or theatre, head over to the Arts Centre Melbourne on the banks of the Yarra River.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of things to do in and around Melbourne. A good place to start is at the Royal Botanic Gardens. Its 8,500 different plants, including many rare specimens, have drawn locals to this central park for nearly 175 years. A Yarra River cruise is a relaxing way to get a nice look at the city, while a little further out is the world-famous Twelve Apostles rock formation in Port Campbell National Park. Located four hours west of the city, the drive along Great Ocean Road offers stunning views and the chance to see wild koalas and kangaroos. Only eight of the impressive limestone stacks remain standing, the ninth having collapsed in 2005.
