A great way to get your bearings in the Victorian capital is to hop on the City Circle Tram. The route surrounds central Melbourne and with 28 stops, will take you to many of the city’s most popular attractions. The free trams leave every 12 minutes from the Flinders Street Station, one of the city’s great architectural gems. Melbourne is known for narrow lanes and covered arcades, each of which has its own character. The elegant Royal Arcade is the oldest in Australia, while the Victorian-era Block Arcade is famed for its magnificent mosaic flooring, stained-glass windows, and period detailing. Shopping at these two centrally-located centers is high on every tourist’s list.

After shopping, relax among one of Australia’s great culinary scenes. It will be worth the visit to stop by Attica, Australia’s only eatery to make San Pellegrino’s list of the world’s Top 50 Restaurants. Named for an especially eccentric patron, Naked for Satan is another ‘must eat’ venue. This chic Spanish setting specializes in ‘pintxos’ (tapas) and offers one of the best rooftop terraces in the country. With vineyards like Domaine Chandon, TarraWarra Estate, and Giant Steps, wine lovers will be spoiled on a visit one or more of the 70 wineries in the Yarra Valley.
